Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk announced via social media that he will be moving his companies, SpaceX and X, out of California and into Texas. Musk cited recent legislative actions in California, including the SAFETY Act, as pivotal factors influencing his decision.
In a series of posts on X, Musk declared that SpaceX’s headquarters, currently located in Hawthorne, California, will be relocated to Starbase, Texas. Starbase, a burgeoning company town in the southern part of the state, is envisioned to be a central hub for SpaceX’s future endeavors. Additionally, Musk revealed plans to move X, a social media platform, from its current base in San Francisco to Austin, Texas.
“The SAFETY Act, signed by California Governor Gavin Newsom, which prohibits school districts from mandating parental notification if a child desires to be identified by a different gender, was the final straw,” Musk stated on X. He expressed frustration with what he described as legislative measures that he perceives as detrimental to both families and businesses.
Musk’s decision comes amid ongoing controversies and personal matters. Earlier this year, one of Musk’s children petitioned a California court for a name and gender change, seeking to distance themselves from their father’s fame and wealth. Musk has faced criticism for his public comments on gender identity issues, which have sparked debate and scrutiny.
Furthermore, Musk pointed out concerns over safety and crime in San Francisco, particularly around the building housing X’s operations. “I am tired of the violent crime surrounding X’s current location in San Francisco,” Musk stated in a subsequent post, reinforcing his rationale for the move to Austin, Texas.
This relocation follows a broader trend of Musk’s affinity towards Texas. In February, SpaceX initiated steps to move its business incorporation from Delaware to Texas, following a legal dispute in Delaware over Musk’s 2018 compensation package for Tesla, which was challenged by shareholders.
With Texas increasingly becoming a preferred destination for tech and aerospace industries, Musk’s decision is expected to bolster the state’s economy and solidify its position as a hub for cutting-edge technology ventures.
