A woman was killed Sunday morning in a violent attack on a New York City subway train when a man set her clothes on fire with a lighter. The incident, which authorities are calling a “brutal murder,” occurred around 7:30 a.m. on an F train traveling to Brooklyn. The suspect was arrested hours later at another subway station in Manhattan.
According to police, the victim was reportedly motionless when the attack began, though it remains unclear whether she was asleep at the time. The assailant approached the woman without warning and ignited her clothing, quickly engulfing her in flames. Surveillance footage from the train shows the victim standing up while she was ablaze.
Witnesses and security cameras captured disturbing images of the suspect calmly sitting on a bench on the subway platform, watching as first responders arrived. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the suspect’s behavior as “depraved” and emphasized the chilling nature of the crime. Body-worn cameras from responding officers provided critical evidence, allowing investigators to identify the suspect.
The assailant, who is an immigrant from Guatemala, was located and arrested about eight hours after the attack at the 34th Street–Herald Square station. Police found him in possession of a lighter. Authorities did not release the suspect’s name, but said charges are pending as the investigation continues. The victim’s identity has also not been disclosed.
NYPD officials noted that the suspect and victim did not appear to know each other. Surveillance footage from inside the subway car revealed the initial ignition of a blanket the victim was wearing, which rapidly spread into flames. Police believe the suspect’s actions were premeditated, but have not yet confirmed a motive for the attack.
Key to the suspect’s capture were tips from local high school students who recognized him from the body camera footage released by police. Their timely call to authorities led to the suspect’s arrest in Herald Square, a busy station located near Macy’s department store.
The attack has sparked shock and outrage across the city, raising concerns about safety on the subway system. Police have promised to release further details about the case in the coming days.
The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the murder.
