It has been over three months since Russia invaded Ukraine, and the war still has no end. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky delivered a memorable speech via video link at the “Shangri-La Dialogue” in Singapore on June 11. In his remarks, he mentioned that Russia’s war against Ukraine is not only about Europe. It is about globally essential things. And also quoted the famous saying of Singapore’s founding Prime Minister Kuan-Yew Lee, “If there had been no international law, and the big fish ate the small fish, and the small fish ate shrimps, we would not have existed.”
In addition, some reporters at the scene asked what the international community can do to counter China’s military and economic threats to Taiwan or how Taiwan should respond when China seeks to take Taiwan by force if necessary.
In reply, Zelensky did not directly mention China or Taiwan and avoided mentioning the names of Chinese leaders. Instead, he says “we need to assist countries in need through diplomacy” and that the international community must support pre-emptive measures to avoid war requires efforts.
The Washington Post commented that it was the first time Ukraine publicly expressed its support for Taiwan, although he was not named any country. But, it has already attracted the attention of international public opinion.
