US President Biden pardons son Hunter claiming he was ‘singled out’

President Joe Biden has granted a pardon to his son, Hunter Biden, on firearms and tax convictions, a decision that has raised eyebrows and sparked debate about the use of presidential clemency powers. The move, which comes just weeks before Hunter Biden was due to face sentencing for a series of felonies, marks a reversal of Biden’s earlier pledge not to use his authority to grant clemency to family members.

In a statement released by the White House on Sunday, President Biden defended his decision, claiming that his son had been “singled out” and “unfairly” prosecuted due to his family name. “There has been an effort to break Hunter – who has been five and a half years sober, even in the face of unrelenting attacks and selective prosecution,” the president said. “In trying to break Hunter, they’ve tried to break me – and there’s no reason to believe it will stop here. Enough is enough.”

Biden also explained that his belief in the justice system had been tested by the political nature of the case. “I believe in the justice system, but as I have wrestled with this, I also believe raw politics has infected this process and it led to a miscarriage of justice,” he added. “Once I made this decision this weekend, there was no sense in delaying it further.”

Hunter Biden had been facing felony charges for lying about his drug use during a gun background check and for failing to pay over $1.4 million in taxes. These offenses were set to be addressed in court in the coming weeks, and Biden’s decision to pardon his son has raised questions about the fairness of the justice system, especially as it coincides with broader political debates surrounding the independence of law enforcement.

Critics of the pardon have pointed to potential concerns regarding the abuse of presidential powers, particularly as the country prepares for a new presidential administration. The decision comes as former President Donald Trump faces his own legal challenges, with critics warning that he could use the power of the presidency to target political adversaries through law enforcement agencies stacked with loyalists.

Trump, in response to Biden’s pardon, denounced it as an “abuse of power,” further fueling the ongoing discourse on the proper use of presidential clemency. As the country moves into the final weeks of Biden’s presidency, this controversial decision is likely to remain a focal point in discussions about the role of politics in the American justice system.
