US COVID-19 Deaths Top 100,000

The U.S. has now passed the 100,000 death mark since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in January.

The first case of the virus was recorded in America in late January.

Already the worst affected country in the world in terms of fatalities, the U.S. also accounts for around 30% of all global infections, with 1.7 million Americans having caught the virus.

Numbers of fatalities put down to COVID-19 are tracked by Johns Hopkins University in the state of Maryland, and earlier today the figure stood at 100,276.

According to a senior BBC reporter in the U.S., this is roughly equivalent to the number of combined American military dead in the Korean, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

And while the virus which has so far infected over 5.5 million worldwide with over 350,000 fatalities is apparently on the decline in some nations, the U.S population centres of Washington D.C., Chicago, and Los Angeles remain particularly hard hit, at one point seeing hundreds of deaths on a daily basis.
