The 2020 Taipei Film Festival – Coming Soon!

Taking place from June 25th to July 11th, the 2020 Taipei Film Festival (TFF) is ready to impress film fans from around the world.

With the COVID-19 pandemic seemingly on the ebb here in Taiwan, and the country slowly getting back on track, movie fans can look forward to what will be the 22nd Taipei Film Festival and all it has to offer.

With its history dating back to 1998, the current incarnation was the first film festival to be funded by a city government in Taiwan, over time becoming a permanent feature under the umbrella of the Taipei Culture Foundation, and holding film screenings and competitions annually for movie lovers and filmmakers from around the world.

With the support of the government, the festival still stands apart from others by way of its “City in Focus” features each year from 2002 – 2015 in a bid to systematically take audiences on a global tour, as well as its numerous film-related public-participation activities.

Notably for the next generation of producers and filmmakers, the festival is now co-organized with Festival des 3 Continents to host the “ Produire au Sud Taipei Workshop.”

And for those who are willing to immerse themselves in local Taiwanese culture or are just tired of Hollywood blockbusters, the Taipei Film Festival provides a movie list packed with plenty of niche themes, some including Taiwanese cultural elements, controversial societal glimpses into the sordid underbelly of our society that doesn’t make it into government promotional campaigns.

Viewer discretion is advised at times – so do your homework before you take the youngsters with you.

Formerly taboo subject matter including transgender rights, and issues still, rightly, at the problem end of society such as pedophilia, even SM fetishes, all feature this year offering food for thought for audiences.

The festival also features 11 interactive VR movies, with a trio of Taiwanese films included.
