Taiwan President’s DPP Primary Victory called ‘unbelievable’ by some commentators

A commentator and also an entrepreneur, Sun Ching-yu, in his weekly column for Storm Media has questioned the victory of Taiwan President’s victory in the DPP Presidential Primary Race. Sun has questioned about the legitimacy of this victory by President Tsai Ing-wen in the column written on Monday.

Sun wrote in his column that “With less resources and support from party members, William Lai (賴清德) fought a lonely battle, It’s unbelievable that Tsai could beat Lai by 8.2 percent in the polls.”

He added that in almost every public opinion polls held before the Democratic Progressive Party primary elections, President Tsai was trailing behind Lai. However, Sun says that the news reports and opinion of analysts are different and he also says that Tsai’s victory in the elections is a “miracle”.

Some of the DPP member also attributed Tsai’s victory to the China-US trade war as well as the anti-extradition law protests in Hong Kong and also the activities celebrating Taiwan Relations Act’s 40th anniversary celebrations says Sun who claims this was attributed by DPP members.

Sun also added that “The Kuomintang (KMT) camp is happy about the DPP’s presidential primary result because Tsai will be a weaker opponent than Lai.”

Sun then went on to talk about the chances of President Tsai winning the 2020 Presidential Elections. Sun says that despite her “miraculous” victory in the presidential primary race, Tsai’s odds of defeating her opponents are worrisome even to many DPP supporters.
