Somali Govt & Opposition Candidates Agree On Peaceful Demonstrations

Mogadishu (PP News) — The Prime Minister of Somalia Mohammed Hussein Roble today held a meeting with the Union of the Somali Presidential Candidates in Mogadishu.

Attended by two former Somali Presidents and other candidates, the meeting took place one day before planned Friday demonstrations that opposition candidates had called for earlier this week.

Roble and Presidential Candidates discussed ways to break the electoral deadlock, and the need to conduct peaceful demonstrations following the 19 February violent demonstrations.

The Federal Government of Somalia apologised for the manner in which the security forces responded to demonstrations. This breakthrough was made possible by the Presidential Candidates who distanced themselves from Yusuf Mohamud Siyad Indha’ade, who had claimed to have taken over security at the Unknown Soldier’s Monument.

Breakthrough: The Union of Somali Presidential Candidates and Prime Minister Roble have struck a deal to ensure that demonstrations will be peaceful.

The Federal Government of Somalia and the Union of Presidential Candidates have struck a five-point deal:

2- Both the Federal Government and Presidential Candidates will ensure that demonstrations will be peaceful.

3- The Federal Government of Somalia and the Union of Presidential Candidates agreed on the postponement of demonstrations slated to take place on 26 February, 2021.
