Somali Government Endorses 17 Sept Electoral Model

Mogadishu (PP News Desk) — In a significant political move coming out of Somalia, Prime Minister Mohammed Hussein Roble has declared that his government was committed to elections based on the 17 September electoral model.

Prime Minister Roble met civil society members in the capital Mogadishu following clashes between the government forces and clan militias in several neighbourhoods.

“I call on all Somali elections stakeholders to prepare for a national election and refrain [from] any action that would jeopardize this effort” reads a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister.

President of Somalia Mohammed Abdullahi Farmaajo will also deliver a speech shortly  on the elections.

Both Puntland and Jubaland welcomed the statement on the hitherto stalled elections.

All federal member states are now committed to elections based on the 17 September Agreement.

President Mohammed is expected to endorse the new electoral roadmap and sign an executive order that will effectively dissolve the bicameral legislature.

The breakthrough will see Somalia enter an indirect election season to select MPs and Senators who will then elect speakers of the bicameral house and the President.
