U.S. President Donald Trump was last night quickly removed from the briefing room in the White House, before returning soon afterwards to inform the gathered White House media pack “There was a shooting outside of the White House.”
Continuing, Trump said it “seems” an armed individual had been shot by his Secret Service security detail before being taken to the hospital.
The Secret Service later provided details of the incident on Twitter, saying that a 51-year-old male had approached a Uniformed Division officer at his post near the White House. The man said he had a weapon and, as he came towards the officer he suddenly ran off quickly, and “in a drawing motion, withdrew an object from his clothing.”
“The suspect then crouched into a shooter’s stance as if about to fire a weapon,” the Secret Service statement said, at which point an agent fired his weapon hitting and injuring the subject.
Later in the day Fox News’ man in the White House John Roberts reported that he had actually heard the gunshots outside the White House as the president’s briefing began, and when a news reporter asked the president after his return if he was “rattled by this at all” President Trump responded, “Do I seem rattled?”
