Puntland & Galmudug Sign Cooperation Agreement

Galka’yo (PP News Desk) — the Presidents of Galmudug and Puntland, areas to the east of Taiwan’s newest diplomatic ally, Somaliland, Ahmed Abdi Kariye and Said Abdullahi Deni yesterday signed an agreement in Galka’yo, the divided city separately controlled by the two Federal Member States of Somalia

The Puntland and Galmudug Presidents agreed to cooperate on issues ranging from security, to institution building and business.

The two Presidents of Puntland and Galmudug also agreed to work on creating a consensus on regional electoral issues, and thanked the International Community for its assistance in state-building endeavours in the wider Somalia and its support for the territorial integrity and political unity of the nation of Somalia.

Unsubstantiated reports indicate that the Puntland and Galmudug Presidents agreed that selection of MPs and Senators take place in administrative capitals of Federal Member States.

This unconfirmed breakthrough might break the deadlock over the current electoral schedule in the country.

Puntland and Jubaland have recently declined to nominate their members for the national electoral commission.

They allege that the Federal Government of Somalia in Mogadishu has influenced the make-up of the electoral commission.
