Puntland Calls For Wider Participation In Somali Electoral Talks

Garowe (PP News Desk) — Puntland State in the north of Somalia, a region sharing a disputed border with Taiwan’s diplomatic ally in the region, Somaliland, has reiterated its position on the summit that the Somalia President Mohammed Abdullahi Mohammed had proposed be held in Garowe.

A spokesman for the Puntland Government told the media that end of the President’s term necessitates wider participation in electoral talks to break the deadlock despite the September 2020 Agreement.

Puntland welcomed the summit on the election but suggested Mogadishu as the venue.

“(the) Puntland President briefed the Council of Ministers about efforts the government had put into addressing grievances about (the) 17 September electoral agreement” said the Spokesman (pictured).

Puntland sided with Jubaland State in the south of the country over renegotiation of the agreement that had been finalised following a compromise from the Federal Government to abrogate the Electoral Law in favour of indirect elections demanded by Puntland and Jubaland.

There are questions over the meaning of “stakeholders”remaining. Federal Institutions and Federal Member States are stakeholders due to relegation of political parties in a country returning to indirect elections conducted in 2017.
