Poland approves sale of 4 MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine

It is well known that the war between Russia and Ukraine is heating up all the time and now that we are well over an year beyond the first time Russia invaded Ukraine, we know that things are not going to die down soon. It is also worth noting that the only reason Ukraine is surviving this attack from Russia is because of the help they are getting from the US as well as European countries. Ukraine also wants to join the Nato and want to be a member of the EU which is the main reason why Russia is opposing this move.

Talking about the EU countries, Poland has now pledged to provide 4 MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine and becomes the first country to pledge such a support of fighter jet sales. This is after the US provided military aid to Ukraine but declined to provide fighter jets to the country for its war against Russia. Poland President Andrzej Duda said “When it comes to the MiG-29 aircraft, which are still operating in the defense of Polish airspace, a decision has been taken at the highest levels, we can say confidently that we are sending MiGs to Ukraine,”

President Duda also added that “The Czech Republic and Poland are countries that are in the absolute vanguard when it comes to supporting Ukraine, both at humanitarian and military levels,” as it becomes the first NATO country to pledge fighter jet support to the Ukraine. The reason why Poland is giving support to Ukraine against Russia is because of the past history between Russia and Poland and how the Polish people still see Russia from their cold war past.

Poland’s decision to provide fighter jets to Ukraine is also seen as a way to create pressure on the US, UK and Germany to send them the fighter jets that Ukraine President Zelensky has already asked for. However, after this announcement, US released a statement saying that the decision to send F-16s to Ukraine is a “sovereign decision” and added that President Biden would not be swayed to provide F-16s to Ukraine just because Poland have sent them to Ukraine.
