Mediation Conference Called In Puntland After Clan Violence Near Taiwan’s Ally, Somaliland

Garowe (PP News Desk) — The Puntland Government will organise a meeting for two subclans whose militias clashed near Iskushuban in northern Somalia one week ago.

The region is just to the east of Somaliland, Taiwan’s latest diplomatic ally in Africa, and a region like Japan looking for increased global recognition.

In recent weeks, reports have indicated the presence of the al-Shabaab terrorist group in the area north west of Iskushuban on the Somaliland – Somalia border, although it is not thought they are involved in the latest violence.

The Puntland Ministry for Security has sent a letter to the notables of the two subclans and urged them to comply with the preliminary agreement reached following meetings facilitated by the Puntland Government.

The Security Ministry appointed Bari Deputy Governor Ahmed Mohamud Ahmed to organise the mediation conference slated to take place on 1st February 2021.

Puntland Security Ministry urges the two Iskushuban subclans to comply with the preliminary agreement.

The Puntland Government Security Minister Abdisamad Gallan leads the committee tasked with preventing a flare-up of feuding over turning parts of the Iskushuban countryside into a village.

The Puntland State Government previously outlawed unplanned urbanisation and fencing off parts of the countryside by some communities to claim ownership of illegally acquired plots of land.
