While the differences between Taiwan and China are known to each and everyone in the region, there is still less awareness of the issues everywhere else. We have seen that people are not aware if there are any issues between Taiwan and China or the reason behind it. An opinion-editorial piece was recently published on a British website called The Guardian.
This article is written by the former NATO Secretary-General as well as the former Prime Minister of Denmark, Anders Fogh Rasmussen. He has made a very strong argument as to why European nations should defend Taiwan. This means that Anders believes that European nations should be against China.
Now, the title of Anders’ article is an explanation enough as to what his thoughts are about the China-Taiwan relationship. The title of his article reads “Hong Kong showed China is a threat to democracy. Now Europe must defend Taiwan,”. Even talking about the title of this article, we can see why he feels the way he does. Because we have seen what happened in Hong Kong due to its extradition bill backed by China.
In the article, Rasmussen also makes a very bold statement coming from a former Prime Minister of the country. He says that European countries need to defend Taiwan and safeguard the liberal democracy of Taiwan. If it doesn’t then it means that Europe’s own values of democracy will be eroded.
Rasmussen also says that many European countries have already raised concerns towards China’s investment and partnership along with its “continued authoritarian drift”. He believes that Europe should follow the US’ example and step up support for Taiwan with action.
Rasmussen also says that “Until we do, the EU’s claims to be basing foreign policy on values, is a statement that rings hollow,” referring to defending Taiwan’s democratic values. He also says that European nations should reject China’s “warped viewpoint that Taiwan is just a rebel province.”
