India’s PM Has Twitter Account Hacked, ‘Asks’ For Financial Donations

The popular social media site Twitter has confirmed that an account belonging to India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently been hacked.

It is believed the account was linked to a website belonging to the Prime Minister.

Twitter has reportedly already followed its own internal security procedures to take back control of the account.

While hacked, the account sent out a series of tweets requesting followers of the Prime Minister of the world’s biggest democracy send cryptocurrency donations to a relief fund.

The account, which serves as the official Twitter account for Prime Minister Modi has more than 2.5 million followers.

Mr. Modi’s personal account meanwhile, with over 61 million followers, was unaffected according to Twitter.

Speaking to a UK based media outlet, Twitter said “We are actively investigating the situation. At this time, we are not aware of additional accounts being impacted.”

It is understood, however, that more than US$ 100,000 may have been transferred into the linked ‘fund’.

The tweets that were sent from the account asking for donations have since been removed.

In recent months a number of famous people have had their Twitter accounts hacked by unknown cyber criminals including former U.S. President Barack Obama, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, and even business accounts belonging to companies including Apple and Uber.
