India has now recorded more COVID-19 infections than Italy, and could soon surpass the numbers posted by infections in Spain and the United Kingdom.
Currently the sixth-highest nation in the world with more than 276,000 total cases and 7,750 deaths, the sub-continent is now just days away from moving past the 289,000 total cases seen in both the UK and Spain.
Unlike both European nations, however, the total number of deaths in India is disproportionately low with some speculating that the true figures of those dying may be hampered by the size of the population and reporting procedures in place across the country.
BBC reports now have the health care system in the city of Mumbai on the edge of collapse, with hospitals in other large cities also struggling to cope.
India’s rise in the coronavirus rankings comes just days after the national railway system started to relax measures limiting travel, and in the same week that shopping centers, places or worship and restaurants in the nation of 1.4 billion have been reopened.
To date the virus has claimed 413,733 lives with over 7.3 million cases reported around the world.
The USA remains the worst affected nations with over two million total cases and over 114,000 deaths.
