Hong Kong police detain 23 on Tiananmen crackdown’s 34th anniversary

You must have seen the tensions between China and Taiwan right now and it is known that there will be an election early next year in Taiwan which adds to the tension as well since it is not known who will win and what will be the outcome based on who gets elected. Between all this, it is worth noting that the Hong Kong police has detained 23 people on the 34th anniversary of Tiananmen crackdown which happened on June 4, 1989. It is reported that the detained people include 11 males and 12 females who are said to be of age between 20 and 74 according to Hong Kong Police’s statement. The statement also added that “They were taken to a police station and later released without having been arrested” and a 53-year-old female was arrested because of obstructing a police officer.

When China was asked about the global events to mark the anniversary of this crackdown, they said that their “government had already come to a clear conclusion about the political turmoil that occurred in the late 1980s, and any attempt to smear China and interfere in its internal affairs under this pretext would fail”. It is worth noting that China and Hong Kong have been trying to remove any evidence of the crackdown from public domain so as to erase any memory of this brutality from the future generation. This efforts include “purging libraries of books and seizing the “Pillar of Shame” statue commemorating its victims”. Also, it was seen that three years ago, the organizers of an unapproved event were charged for inciting subversion.

Also, it is worth noting that instead of condemning the events, pro-Beijing groups were also seen holding a 3-day carnival event with cultural dance performances and musical events as well. All this was done so that the common public could not see the candlelit vigils being carried out. National Taiwan University graduates condemned the arrest of fellow student to commemorate the Tiananmen crackdown on which the Hong Kong police released a statement saying that the students have been giving “unfounded and false accusations.” in a post they have shared on Facebook.
