Former Nato Chief believes that Taiwan has a major role to play in the global scenario when it comes to problem-solving. This is also indicating the fact that Taiwan can solve problems with China. For this reason, the former Nato Chief says that Canada needs to invite Taiwan to ICAO meeting. The International Civil Aviation Organization meeting is scheduled to happen in Canada next week. He also says that Taiwan “needs to be invited to major international events”
Former NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen wrote this in an editorial on Friday. This article from him titled “Canada’s guest list to a major aviation conference needs to fly in the face of China.” was published in Toronto Globe and Mail. However, we also need to note that the former Nato Chief is hinting more towards giving an answer to China rather than recognizing Taiwan. We can also say that the ex-Nato Chief is suggesting to use Taiwan against China.
However, Rasmussen also writes that “Universality is a defining principle of the UN. And yet Taiwan is denied the simple right to sit, even as an observer, in its forums,”. He believes Taiwan could play an important role in climate change as well as healthcare globally.
Rasmussen also notes that Taiwan “is not asking for UN agencies to take a side on China’s territorial claims; they are merely asking to be invited as observers in order to contribute to global problem-solving,”. He also adds that Taiwan, a founding member of the ICAO, should be invited to the 11-day meet taking place in Canada. And he says this because Taiwan “serves 1.7 million flights a year”. Rasmussen also wants the democracies to fight against “strong, selfish powers” and the first step is to invite Taiwan to the ICAO meeting, he concludes.
