A modern day Ford gas guzzler – C: Caleb White

In terms of total sales, all the major EU auto makers are contributing to the total with Renault and Volkswagen making noticeable strides in all form of EVs currently on the roads.

The 100% electric goal inside a decade however, has a number of analysts frowning with a number of car makers yet to come on board in committing to the same.

To this end, the assurance from such an influential name as Ford is being welcomed across the continent.

In addition to promising to make all passenger vehicles electric only by the end of the decade, Ford is also on course to make a full “two-thirds of commercial vehicle sales expected to be  all-electric or plug-in hybrid“ in the same timeframe.

In doing so the firm is in the process of investing up to US$1 billion in a new purpose built EV facility in the German city of Cologne, Germany – to be titled the Ford Cologne Electrification Center.

“Our announcement today to transform our Cologne facility, the home of our operations in  Germany for 90 years, is one of the most significant Ford has made in over a generation. It  underlines our commitment to Europe and a modern future with electric vehicles at the heart of  our strategy for growth,” Stuart Rowley, president of Ford of  Europe, went on record as saying, adding “The decision to make the production and development site in Cologne the e-mobility center for  Ford in Europe is an important signal to the entire workforce,” said Martin Hennig, chairman of  the General Works Council of Ford-Werke GmbH. “It offers a long-term perspective for our  employees and at the same time encourages them to help shape this electric future.”
