China’s Xi and Russia’s Putin meet in Russia as Ukraine war rages on

You must have already seen the reports of Japanese PM Kishida visiting Ukraine, and the US President has already visited the country as well. However, we had not seen anyone visiting their counterpart which is the Russian side so far. Also, Russian President Vladimir Putin has an arrest warrant issued against him by the International Criminal Council which means that he is restricted to travel to most countries around the world that recognize the ICC. In an unprecedented event, however, the Chinese President made his visit to Russia and met the Russian President as well.

This can be seen as a show of strength as well and one which China wants to make the world see because they also have a similar situation with Taiwan. Talking about China’s President meeting the Russian President, it was noted that the Chinese side emphasized on being peacemakers and urged the Russian President to end this war. The readout from the meeting between Russia and China made it clear that they did not like the US or UK interfering between them. The statement read that China’s “objective and fair” stance on Ukraine was welcomed by the Russians and also mentioned that they both opposed any countries or group of countries (EU) harming the “legitimate security interests of other countries in pursuit of military, political or other advantages.”

Triggered by the Chinese’s visit to Russia, one US diplomat said “China feels no responsibility to hold the Kremlin accountable for the atrocities committed in Ukraine, and instead of even condemning them, it would rather provide diplomatic cover for Russia to continue to commit those very crimes,”

Meanwhile, it is worth noting that a ceasefire might be planned but the Ukraine President has already said that it would likely favour only Russia as they can come back and attack the country at their time as they see fit. Apart from that, NATO also confirmed that they have enough evidence to say that Russia asked China for lethal weapons but also added that “We haven’t seen any proof that China is delivering lethal weapons to Russia, but we have seen some signs that this has been a request from Russia, and that this is an issue that is considered in Beijing by the Chinese authorities,”
