We have already seen that the tensions between China and Taiwan have been escalating every single day. The tensions were triggered when Taiwan supported Hong Kong protests against extradition bill brought by China. While those protests are still going on every weekend in Hong Kong, we are getting reports that China is holding a military drill near Taiwan this week.
This means that China will now hold its 3rd military drill in a very short span of time. This can also be seen as a threat given to Taiwan that anything can happen. Because we have already seen China threatening Taiwan with military action prior to this as well.
Also, this military drill by China is to show protests against the US government’s deal with Taiwan of the 66 F-16V fighter jets which will cost US $8Billion. Chinese newspaper announced that the government will hold a “live fire drill” near to the Taiwan Strait this week.
Zhejiang Maritime Safety Administration also announced that “all ships will be banned from entering the waters off the coast of China’s Zhejiang Province for 48 hours starting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday” due to the military drills. In 2016 when President Tsai came to the office in Taiwan, she refused to accept the “1992 consensus” of Taiwan and said that China-Taiwan talks at that time were a “historic fact”.
Due to this reason, the Chinese government has been cross with Taiwan for a long time and it is also the reason why Taiwan is seeing military drills held by China very close to the country. Also, it is known that China is pushing to de-list Taiwan as a country. There have been many instances were Taiwan’s reference as a country independent from China has been censored by Beijing.
