Aung San Suu Kyi will serve three more years

Aung San Suu Kyi will now serve three more years in prison. A military court in Myanmar convicted her. In addition, Ms. Kyi came under the blow of election fraud charges. She has already spent a lot of time under house arrest.

Aung San Suu Kyi is the former leader of Myanmar. She was, at one time, the face of Myanmar. She will now serve 20 years in prison. There are 11 charges against her. She also has lots of challenges ahead.

Ms. Kyi continues to deny all the allegations. Many people believe that trials are not perfect. Many right groups have accused them of being politically motivated. If Ms. Kyi gets convicted for all the charges pressed against her, she will serve 200 years.

The sentence may subject her to hard labor during her prison time. She is a famous 77-year-old Nobel Laureate. Yet, despite her famous accomplishments, she served detention through a house arrest.

There are many restrictions for Ms. Kyi and her lawyers as well. Neither the public nor the media have any access to the court hearings. The military is also involved in this matter. The lawyers cannot talk to journalists. The military also makes sure that they do not interact.

She was guilty of fraud in a general election in November 2020. She belonged to the National League for Democracy or NLD party. The party won the election. The victory was also easy for the NLD party.

But later Army conducted a coup. This came after they alleged major voter fraud. But many election observers, who were working independently, denied the allegations. Instead, they asserted the fact that the election was a “representative of the will of the people.”

Many organizations have criticized the treatment of Aung San Suu Kyi. Many groups that work for democracy and civil rights have expressed their worries. The military is also using its powers to control whatever it can control. This violates many rights.
