Luigi Nicholas Mangione, the 26-year-old man accused of fatally shooting United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in a high-profile attack in Midtown Manhattan last week, has signaled his intention to fight being extradited to New York to face murder charges.
Mangione was arrested on Monday in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a tip from an employee at a local McDonald’s led authorities to track him down. He was charged with the fatal shooting of Thompson, as well as a series of lesser offenses in Pennsylvania. The arrest came just hours after law enforcement officials confirmed Mangione was the prime suspect in the murder of the 51-year-old CEO, who was gunned down outside a hotel in the heart of New York City’s bustling Midtown district.
On Tuesday, Mangione appeared before a Pennsylvania court for a brief hearing. During the proceedings, his defense attorney, Thomas Dickey, informed the judge that Mangione would contest the extradition to New York. Dickey requested a hearing to challenge the transfer, which could delay the process of moving Mangione to face the charges in New York. Mangione, who has 14 days to formally lodge the challenge, will remain in custody in Pennsylvania without bail while awaiting the outcome of the extradition process.
In the courtroom, Mangione was seen wearing an orange prison jumpsuit. Throughout the hearing, he alternated between staring straight ahead, looking down at papers, and occasionally glancing at the gallery. At one point, his defense attorney had to intervene when Mangione attempted to speak out of turn. His behavior and demeanor suggested an attempt to maintain composure amid the gravity of the charges.
The court appearance came just six days after Thompson, a prominent figure in the American health insurance industry, was killed outside a hotel in Midtown Manhattan. Thompson, who served as the CEO of United Healthcare, one of the largest health insurance providers in the United States, was reportedly shot in broad daylight. Authorities have yet to disclose details surrounding the motive for the attack, although speculation continues to swirl.
Following his arrest, Mangione was escorted from a police car to the courthouse, where he briefly spoke to reporters. His statement, however, was partly unintelligible, though he did make reference to an “insult to the intelligence of the American people.” His cryptic remarks have only added to the public intrigue surrounding the case.
For now, Mangione will remain in Pennsylvania custody as legal proceedings unfold.
